In honor of Mother’s Day I am posting this oil scetch that is actually a Grandmother, Grandson representation.
A scene of Mother and Child was a popular theme often revisited by one of my favorite artists, Mary Cassatt. It was noted that she often chose familiar women and put them in everyday scenes, as she thought that professionally posed models would look more stiff.
There is something very endearing about the quiet scenes that she created of the very tender, insignificant moments shared between a Mother and Child.
In the case of my painting this moment was captured by my camera and then recreated to show a quiet moment after a nap when my nephew and my mother huddled in a drowsy bliss looking out on a rainy afternoon.
